Janet Hirsch at Movement
In her Director of Programs role at Movement, Janet Hirsch has been overseeing competitive and recreational programs at over 30 climbing gyms around the United States, giving her a unique perspective on what it takes to run successful offerings for all ages and foster positive connections across the board, from program managers and coaches to participants and parents. (Pictured: Janet Hirsch at Movement’s Leadership Summit in Boulder in 2024; all photos are by Michael Emery Hecker, courtesy of Movement)

Janet Hirsch’s climbing origins lie in an outing taken with her older brother’s Boy Scouts troop, but there wasn’t exactly an immediate, heartfelt connection to the activity. “Honestly, at first I hated it,” Hirsch admits, noting that she had difficulty putting her full trust in the belayers. However, five years later, Hirsch tried climbing again as part of a Girl Scouts’ trip, and the meticulous instruction from the guides assuaged any lingering trepidation. Hirsch was hooked, and her interest in climbing aligned well with an “inherent love of teaching,” all of which led to instructional work at ropes courses and, eventually, a summer camp staff position at Earth Treks in 2009.

Other staff positions at Earth Treks soon followed, including coaching the gym’s youth team and working as a lead instructor. And in 2013, Hirsch was asked to manage all of the indoor climbing instruction programs for the gyms. “I’ve had basically some variation of that role ever since,” she says. (All Earth Treks facilities, along with Planet Granite gyms, were rebranded as Movement facilities in 2021.)

Hirsch estimates that approximately 75 percent of Movement’s programs are youth-focused, and the other 25 percent are adult-focused, but those percentages can vary across Movement’s 34 facilities. Overseeing all those various programs for the country’s largest climbing gym business is far from an easy task, but for Hirsch it’s a role that has come with a premium opportunity to help foster the meaningful connections—among program participants as well as the staff teams she leads—that is such a big focus of her work. We sat down with Hirsch to learn more.

CBJ: So, what does being Director of Programs at Movement entail?

HIRSCH: As Director of Programs, I provide guidance in the form of guidelines and consult-support to Youth Team and Program Managers in each of our 34 facilities across the country. This includes writing and updating curriculum (or getting other experts from around our gyms to collaborate on content creation), providing risk management guidelines, and providing structure for trainings, as well as coaching our Managers on being great managers and instructors/coaches. I also have a team of four regional Assistant Directors of programs who provide more direct content area support in the Colorado and NY/PA regions.

Is there a specific memory from your role thus far that sticks out?

There are so many great memories, but I really love getting to see former campers, athletes or coaches continue to develop their skillsets as educators. There are so many former campers/athletes—Colin Meyer, Liberty Runnels, Drew Hill and many others—who are now coaches themselves or even Managers themselves of Teams or Programs and are helping coach up the next generation.

What is a personal quality or characteristic that helps someone in the role of a Director of Programs?

Organization and good communication skills. With 30+ gyms, two Managers and a Gym Director at each, there’s a lot to keep track of! And it’s a really cool role in that I get to connect with folks at all levels in our staff and customer base. And that requires being able to communicate effectively with a wide range of people, from our athletes up to our CEO.

Do you have a tip you could share for communicating effectively as a programming leader?

Use the tools available to you and be consistent. If your company has something like Asana or Teams, that can work great to have a board or chat for sharing updates to information on a regular cadence. And we use monthly newsletters to promote consistent communication between our managers and the customer base in recurring youth programs, like our youth teams especially.

Youth climbers at Movement Sunnyvale in 2022
For youth programs especially, Hirsch says it’s “the connections between coaches, athletes and parents” that “really seem to make or break a program,” and she encourages program staff to “show genuine interest and engage with those around you.” (Pictured: Youth climbers at Movement Sunnyvale in 2022)

What’s an aspect of your role that people might not realize…or might not see on a day-to-day basis at the gyms?

Gathering and compiling feedback. As a company we really value getting input on what’s going well and what we can do better. We have systems for staff, as well as customers, to provide feedback. One of the systems we currently use is Asana forms—one for participants, one for coaches/instructors. The results come into a board that is accessed by the local team and myself, and I’ll share out great feedback or ideas that come in through those forms.

That is a super fun and exciting part of my job—to review this feedback and see what updates I can make to our guidelines…and share back the best practices from across all our facilities. It’s so much more fun to have 30+ other people to reach out to for ideating how to make the most exceptional climbing experiences for our members and guests.

What are some keys to running a successful gym program for kids?

Successful youth programs require staff who are stoked to work with kids, and who understand (or can be trained in) how to develop their participants’ climbing and risk management skills. The connections between coaches, athletes and parents, and the positive connections with the rest of the climbing community, really seem to make or break a program.

So, show genuine interest and engage with those around you. Our coaches will connect with parents at drop-off or pick-up sharing something that went well or something that was maybe scary or challenging their child faced that day. Our coaches will also help connect the athletes to the rest of the community, sharing what activity or drill they are doing and helping with taking turns, sharing beta, etc.

Also, youth programs require so many more fun props than adult programs, though I still think we can pull off a parents’ summer camp—complete with all the classic fun camp games!

Great—so, what are some props (and materials and resources) that a gym should have on hand at all times for its youth programs?

Hula hoops, pool noodles and a soft ball (or some stuffed animals) go a long way for the non-competitive programs, as does tape for things like playing elimination, etc. We’ve also found that having little items that can be hidden in holds or around the gym really engages our younger climbers (ages 8 and under). For competitive team programs, good quality routesetting or higher density hold areas—where you can make up problems—is a real game changer!

Movement and Redpoint HQ

Movement Climbing, Yoga and Fitness, the world’s largest community of indoor rock climbing gyms, has selected Redpoint HQ as its new software platform provider to run all 33 Movement locations, bringing membership management, retail, front desk operations, marketing and reporting into one system.

The partnership comes during a period of rapid change in climbing gym software. In just over a year, hundreds of gyms worldwide have committed to the Redpoint HQ platform as operators look for a more flexible and data-forward system. As competition in the industry increases and efficiency becomes more important, operators are turning to Redpoint HQ to bring operations, revenue strategy, and member engagement together in a single system.

Movement’s decision to move to Redpoint HQ is part of a broader shift across the industry as gyms look for infrastructure that can support long-term growth.

“Movement has grown into one of the most respected climbing gym operators in the world,” said Tod Bloxham, CEO of Redpoint HQ. “We’re excited to support their teams with technology designed to power their growth for years to come.”

Under the partnership, Redpoint HQ will provide Movement with a platform that connects day-to-day gym operations with deeper data visibility. Each Movement location will operate within a powerful data environment, giving the organization full visibility into performance across all locations. This includes the ability to compare memberships, programs, and retail, supported by advanced analytics and AI tools built directly into the platform.

This helps gyms understand how members and guests are using their facilities, which programs are performing well, and what trends are emerging across locations. Managers can access their data in real time, ask questions directly within the platform, and spot opportunities to improve retention, refine marketing, and better support their communities.

“The technology we use plays a critical role in our day-to-day operations and in ensuring our members and guests have the best experience possible,” said Movement’s CCO, Chris Jenkins. “Redpoint HQ stood out because of the platform’s flexibility, automation and strong data capabilities. It gives us a better understanding of our members and guests, and helps us continue improving the experience across all of our gyms.”

About Redpoint HQ

Redpoint HQ is a powerful platform for modern climbing gyms, combining a modern UI, customizable plans, seamless operations, and powerful business and marketing data—all in one system. Backed by a team with decades of combined experience in the climbing gym industry and software development, Redpoint HQ is a trusted choice for gyms seeking a comprehensive, intuitive and future-ready management solution.

Brooklyn Uprising
Brooklyn, New York

Specs: Brooklyn Uprising is opening this spring in the DUMBO neighborhood of New York City, owned by Creative Director Emily Kollars and Business Director Tyler Tringas. Described by the owners as a “neoclassical” bouldering facility, the gym will blend old-school training with modern design, and contemporary features inside the space are being set up with outdoor climbing movement in mind. The owners are intentionally positioning the gym as a specialized, not-one-size-fits-all facility, in part because they’ve seen a demand for more specialization as the industry matures. Instead of an all-in-one model, they hope to provide “a boutique experience,” said Kollars, while “maintaining a connection to the outdoors,” per the gym’s homepage.

The idea for Brooklyn Uprising began about two years ago, when the owners wanted to give back to their climbing community and perceived a gap in the market of “locally owned and operated” gyms, Kollars stated. About 18 months ago, the duo began looking for a space and found what Kollars said was “not at all an obvious selection” for a climbing gym. “It’s this beautiful old building that originally was a torpedo manufacturing space and then eventually evolved into paper manufacturing, and then most recently it was an architecture firm,” she said. “So, it’s sort of unusual in its layout.” As a result, the team had to closely analyze the interior to maximize the gym’s climbing and training space. Kollars, for example—who comes from a design background—surveyed the space and created a 3D model to help with “looking at basically every possible iteration of wall layout,” she recalled.

image of brooklyn uprising
“The magic of Brooklyn is the intersection of the old school and the modern: a gritty industrial past continuously reimagined by the world’s best designers and forward-thinking entrepreneurs,” the Brooklyn Uprising website states.

Brooklyn Uprising was built in “a really special space” for Kollars and Tringas, Kollars said, in a neighborhood where they have both lived for several years. On the Brooklyn coastline, with a “view of the Manhattan skyline,” the gym is in a large, historic building with an “atrium skylight in the main area,” Tringas detailed. The building itself is “city-block-sized,” with classic artists’ lofts located above the main gym area, “filled with creative folks and studios,” Tringas told CBJ. The team is excited to provide building tenants and DUMBO residents new “opportunities to come in and be a part of a climbing community in New York City,” Kollars added.

image of brooklyn uprising
“We want to take that concept of a garage, of a hardcore training playground, but we want to elevate the experience, so it incorporates the community aspect” and becomes a spot where climbers “want to spend time,” Kollars said.

Brooklyn Uprising will have amenities, programs and routesetting targeted toward training for individuals 16 and older. The 6,200-square-foot facility will have 3,500 square feet of climbing on walls reaching 15 feet, including a Tension Board 2. “We like to think of every gym as being its own crag,” Kollars said, where a distinct voice is developed through routesetting. The routesetting at Brooklyn Uprising will be focused more on outdoor movement and less on competition-style climbing, with the aim of helping climbers develop skills used to send their projects outside. Alongside the bouldering, climbers can access different fitness amenities at the gym, like squat racks and free weights, in addition to hangboards, a sauna, and co-working and lounge space. Brooklyn Uprising will also offer mental and physical coaching and training.

The owners plan to host community-focused events at Brooklyn Uprising as well, such as live music, dance parties and workshops, while incorporating member feedback into decisions for new offerings. “We want people to be able to have their voice heard and recognized and responded to so that this space is truly our space,” Kollars said. “Not just [Tringas] and me dictating what it will be and how it will be, but we want it to be something for our community.”

In Their Words: “Brooklyn is my home. I’ve been in New York for about 17 years, and Brooklyn is really very special to me. And to give a gift, essentially, to our climbing community here in New York, I think doing it in a space that really resonates for me personally felt like an important decision.” – Emily Kollars, Brooklyn Uprising Co-Founder and Creative Director

April 7, 2026 — CLIMBMANAGER introduces Events – a new feature that enables climbing gyms to easily create and manage events, build stronger communities, and boost member engagement.

This new feature allows climbing facilities to create and promote themed events such as Valentine’s Day, Halloween, and other seasonal campaigns – as well as fully custom, gym-specific climbing events tailored to their community.

The Events feature was built around real industry needs: helping gyms organize initiatives that boost engagement, increase attendance, and improve communication with customers – all without relying on external tools.

The biggest advantage: freedom of configuration

One of the key strengths of the new Events feature is its high level of flexibility. Climbing gyms can design events on their own terms, adapting them to their scale, style, and goals (for example: increasing participation, building community, or launching seasonal challenges).

Powerful options, simple experience

While the event setup offers a wide range of configuration options, CLIMBMANAGER focuses on simplicity and usability. The Manager Panel is designed to remain clear and intuitive even with more advanced settings. Just as importantly, navigating events in the Client Panel and Mobile App is straightforward, making it easier for climbers to discover and join.

Events as a tool for building community

The new feature supports not only event organization but also the culture and atmosphere of a climbing gym. Themed events – like Halloween or Valentine’s Day – have long been a natural way to activate climbing communities. Now, climbing gyms can manage and communicate these events by using one platform.

“We built Events to be powerful without becoming complicated. Climbing gyms get full freedom in how they configure an event, but the setup remains intuitive – both for staff in the Manager Panel and for climbers browsing events on the customer side.”  Mateusz Ropka, CEO, CLIMBMANAGER

EP Climbing has introduced the Heritage Range, a new system of climbing holds, macros, and wooden volumes inspired by the original hexagon-shaped holds the company developed nearly 40 years ago.

First introduced in the 1980s, EP’s hexagon-based hold designs helped shape the early years of modern indoor climbing. The Heritage Range revisits that geometry and updates it using modern materials, refined shaping, and contemporary textures suited for today’s climbing gyms and competition walls.

“The Heritage Range draws inspiration from shapes that helped define indoor climbing in its early years,” said Bennett Kornbarth, Lead Designer and HAV Manager at EP Climbing. “By expanding that original hexagon geometry across multiple materials and sizes, we wanted to create a system that gives route setters a lot of flexibility while still feeling familiar on the wall.”

Developed to celebrate EP Climbing’s 40th anniversary, the Heritage Range blends classic design inspiration with the performance and durability required for modern route setting.

The collection includes polyurethane holds, fiberglass macros, and wooden volumes, all built around a consistent hexagon-based design language. Shared base sizing across the different materials allows the pieces to interact as a system, giving route setters the ability to stack, nest, jib, and tessellate shapes while maintaining a cohesive visual style on the wall.

The range supports a wide variety of climbing styles across vertical and moderately overhanging terrain and can be used to create climbs across all difficulty levels. The shapes were also designed to support the powerful, technical movement common in modern competition climbing. Shapes vary from small screw-on jibs and footholds to large macros and wooden volumes that add dimensionality and movement to the wall.

Fiberglass macros within the series feature dual-texture surfaces and sculpted rails that create directional movement possibilities while maintaining the clean geometry of the hexagon base. Wooden elements in the range include both traditional volumes and low-profile tangent shapes that provide subtle edges and additional layering options for modern route setting.

Together, the pieces form a modular system designed to support creative route setting while maintaining a unified aesthetic across the wall.

A selection of shapes from the Heritage Range is currently available through The Candy Shop, with additional pieces expected to be released in April of 2026. The series was first featured at Vertical Pro in November 2025 and will be introduced to the U.S. audience at the Climbing Wall Association Summit in April 2026.

Endurance Bouldering, Stewardship, and Community in Utah’s Sandstone Canyon Country

CASTLE DALE, Utah — What do you get when you combine an endurance bouldering competition, a beach party, a fundraiser, and a trail maintenance day? You get the Joe’s Valley Pump-A-Thon. On May2nd and 3rd, Joe’s Valley Climbing & Community (JVCC) will once again host a weekend that blends endurance bouldering, genuine community, and hands-on land stewardship. There’s nothing else quite like it on the climbing calendar.

The weekend is built around two distinct experiences—a Saturday competition and a Sunday stewardship day—and both are essential to what makes the Pump-A-Thon worth showing up for.

The competition format is simple and inclusive: climb as many boulder problems as you can during the competition window. Gender categories, age divisions, and climbing-level specific brackets mean there’s a fair, meaningful place in the comp for everyone. Whether you are climbing outside for the first time or a seasoned local crusher, you’ll be competing with your peers and cheering each other on. The goal isn’t to be the best. It’s to show up, try hard, and move your body on some of the best rock in Utah.

But anyone who’s been to the Pump-A-Thon knows the comp is only part of it. The competition day carries on with food trucks, a beach-themed social, awards, raffle drawings, a campfire, and music at the Castle Dale Fairgrounds. And then Sunday morning, the event switches gears into something more grounded: a community trail maintenance day, fueled by coffee and donuts, where climbers and locals work side by side on the trails and landings that make Joe’s Valley worth protecting.

The best part? All of it is a fundraiser. Climbers at Joe’s Valley have always taken care of the place, and the Pump-A-Thon grew out of that. We show up, not as an obligation, but as a natural extension of caring about the place. Every registration dollar goes directly to JVCC’s year-round programming that includes the coalition ‘s ongoing trail and landing stewardship work, and the youth outdoor education camps that give local kids from Emery and Carbon County real access to the outdoors, real skills, and real confidence.

This is the work that keeps Joe’s Valley healthy and accessible, and the Pump-A-Thon is how the broader climbing community gets to be a direct part of it. To keep the event accessible, discounted registration is available for students and for residents of Emery and Carbon County.

JVCC is a nonprofit that has been embedded in this community since 2015. JVCC’s mission is straightforward: enhance the local economy, build community, and drive sustainability by bringing rock climbers and locals together around their shared enthusiasm for the outdoors. JVCC is working to make sure that the economic and social benefits of Joe’s Valley’s reputation as a world-class outdoor destination actually stay local, in the trails, the businesses, the schools, and the families that make this place home.

“It has been so rewarding to work with our small team of locals and climbers to help make an impact on the area. From improving safety with off road parking and trails to getting kids outdoors with our summer camps. Events like the Pump-A-Thon provide crucial fundraising to keep our programs going. We all had so much fun together last year! We’re doing this because we love the organization and its mission and we want to keep our programs going.”
– Julie Janus, JVCC Executive Director

The Pump-A-Thon puts that mission into a single weekend in a way that’s hard to replicate any where else.
